Amazon Meal Kits entered the always evolving meal kit industry in mid-2017. This entry by Amazon has made a huge impact on the industry. The meal kit service that is offered by Amazon Fresh is not yet fully operational and available in all states as Amazon is rolling this out gradually across America. However, it has been available in New York, my base, since January 2018 so I have been able to personally experience the service offered by Amazon Meal Kits. As a result. I am now ready to provide a comprehensive comparison of Amazon Meal Kits with Home Chef, one of the largest and most popular meal kit services in America.
The services offered by these two companies have many differences, and they will no doubt appeal to largely different audiences. Due to the subscription service offered by Home Chef, this service will probably appeal to people who want an ongoing weekly service with a good range of changing recipes of varying complexities. On the other hand, Amazon Meal Kits is a much more flexible service and would therefore appeal to people who have less desire to commit to an ongoing weekly service and who would like to experiment with a meal kit service offering easy recipes on an occasional basis.
Home Chef offers delivery options for two, four or six people, with a minimum selection requirement of two dishes per week. There are no maximum limitations.
In comparison, Amazon Meal Kits offer some seriously flexible options for its customers. They do not require subscriptions or commitment to plans. The kits are ordered through the Amazon Fresh online system and you can add as many meal kits as you desire to your Amazon Fresh cart and receive your order two to three days later. The Amazon Meal Kits are designed for two people. It is important to note that you do need an active Amazon Fresh account to order Amazon Meal Kits.
Variety of dishes:
Home Chef offers a total of 11 dishes per week. You can choose from all of them, no matter how many people your chosen plan is catering for. With Amazon Meal Kits, the variety of dishes change regularly and can also differ depending on your location. It is interesting to note that Amazon Fresh also offers additional meal kit options from other companies, such as Martha & Marley Spoon and Tyson Tastemakers. If you would like to find out if the Amazon Meal Kits service is available in your area, simply use the following link, or you can search “meal kits” in the Amazon Fresh search bar
Style and complexity of dishes:
I must say that every dish I have tried from both Amazon Meal Kits and Home Chef have tasted great and I was extremely pleased with both services! It is important to note that it would appear that Amazon Meal Kits seems to focus on providing recipes with very short cooking times. They state that none of their meals will take any longer than 30 minutes to prepare. All their recipes are easy to follow and from my personal experience, many of the dishes took a lot less than 30 minutes to complete. Their recipes seem to be quite classic and none of them are overly complicated to prepare.
Quality of products:
Both Amazon Meal Kits and Home Chef provide meal kits that are made up of very high-quality ingredients. Home Chef, has partnered with excellent producers – Paysan Breton Butter, ‘World Wide Farms’ for farm fresh herbs and vegetables and ‘Sea To Table’ for sustainably sourced seafood.
Home Chef delivers your meal kits in a specifically designed and labeled medium size recyclable box. Inside the box, the ingredients of every recipe has been sorted and stored in individual bags which is great for sorting and storage. The proteins are stored at the bottom of the box along with a large amount of ice. Because of the way the box has been packed, it can easily be left outside for several hours without worrying about the temperature of the ingredients.
With Amazon Meal Kits, each dish comes in its own individually wrapped box and is labeled with the name of the dish along with an image of the meal kit. Each box is very well organized inside. Since the box is small you can simply put it in the fridge until you are ready to use it. Inside the box you will find all that you need for the recipe, including the proteins. There is no ice inside the box, but it is delivered in an Amazon Fresh cooler bag which also contains sufficient ice to keep your meal kit fresh.
The app and website:
Home Chef has an easy to use website and app. You can register, select your weekly dishes, see upcoming menus, specify eating preference, change your payment method etc all online via the website. Ordering your Amazon Meal Kits is quite a different process as there are no subscription requirements to try this service. Everything is done via the Amazon Fresh interface. You can add as many meals as you desire, and you can usually make changes to your order right up until the day before your delivery is due.
When it comes to plan terms there is a huge difference between the two competitors. Home Chef offers a subscription service, with the option of skipping weeks if needed. They also offer some flexibility in picking the delivery day. To cancel your account, you will need to contact customer support via the website. With Amazon Meal Kits you can simply place your order through your Amazon Fresh account. There is no subscription for the Amazon Meal Kit service, and you can pick as many dishes as you want and add these to your Amazon Fresh cart. All meals from Amazon Meal Kits are designed for two people.
With Amazon you can combine your meal kit purchase with your regular grocery shopping via Amazon Fresh. In fact, if we wanted to be completely accurate here, it would be safe to say that the Amazon Meal Kits are an add-on to your normal grocery shopping. With Home Chef there are two add ons that are available. A smoothie that changes flavors on a weekly basis and a seasonal fruit basket. Both add ons are available at a cost of $4.95 each.
Home Chef offers all their meal kits for $9.99 per dish per person, with a minimum requirement of two dishes per week for two people. Shipping is free once you reach a weekly minimum order requirement of $45. If you don’t reach the $45 minimum there is an additional delivery charge of $10.00.
With Amazon Meal Kits, the meal costs can vary from $15.99 to $19.99 for a two person meal, depending on the dish. Since Amazon Meal Kits are ordered through the Amazon Fresh account, there is a fixed cost of $14.99 per month for Prime membership. Shipping is free once you order a minimum of $50 worth of items. You can combine groceries and meal kits in your purchase, which makes it easy to reach this minimum even if you only want one or two meal kits. Amazon Meal Kits would appear to be a great option for people who want to use Amazon Fresh for their ongoing grocery shopping.
