In mid-2017 Amazon entered the meal kit industry, taking a bite out of this very competitive market. The Amazon Meal Kit Service is not yet fully available in all states, but it has been in New York, my home base, since January 2018.

I have had the pleasure of trying this service myself and I am now ready to tell you all about it. I would like to compare it to Plated; one of the largest meal kit delivery services, which also happens to be my favourite.

In general, the services offered by the two companies are quite different.  As a result, they will no doubt appeal to very different audiences. Plated offers a service that is more suited to people who prefer a full ongoing meal kit service that arrives every week like clockwork. Within that service, they expect a range of surprising recipes and easy to cook dinner options. On the other hand, Amazon Meal Kits provides a much more flexible service, appealing to people who want to experience meal kits on an occasional basis, and people who really want easy to prepare recipes.

Variety of plan:

Plated offers three different plan options with two, three or four-person servings, and with each plan you can choose two, three or four recipes per week. In comparison, Amazon Meal Kits offers a much more flexible option without the necessity of a subscription or a commitment to an ongoing plan. Their kits are ordered through Amazon Fresh and you simply add your preferred meal kits to your Amazon Fresh cart and then receive your order two to three days later. The Amazon Meal Kits are designed for two people, but you do need an active Amazon Fresh account to order these.

Variety of dishes:

When it comes to variety, the big winner is undoubtedly Plated. They offer an enormous range of 20 dishes every single week! And you can choose from all of these, regardless of the plan you choose! With Amazon Meal Kits, the variety of dishes does change but it does not change very often, and it can also differ depending on your location. Amazon Fresh also offers some other meal kits options from companies such as Martha & Marley Spoon and Tyson Tastemakers in the New York area. In this link you can find out if the service is available in your area, or by simply searching “meal kits” in the Amazon Fresh section.

Style and complexity of dishes:

After experiencing the meal kits from both Plated and Amazon Meal Kits, I can confirm that most dishes I have tried have been delicious.  As a bonus, using these meal kits has really helped me diversify my cooking. I would say that Plated offers options that are slightly more sophisticated, with more challenging recipes. That is a lovely option to have if you enjoy time in the kitchen.  Naturally, since they offer 20 different recipes per week you can also choose quicker and less sophisticated options.

That is opposed to Amazon Meal Kits that seems to be more focused on providing meal kits with a very short cooking time. They state that none of their meals take any longer than 30 minutes to prepare. And from what I experienced, most dishes took even less than this.

Quality of products:

Both Amazon Meal Kits and Plated deliver high quality products! In addition, Plated provides 100% antibiotic free meats, beef with no added hormones and sustainably sourced fish and seafood whenever possible.

The Box:

Plated delivers their meals kits in a specifically designed and labeled, medium sized recyclable box. Inside the box, the ingredients of each dish have been separated into individual bags that are labeled with the name of each dish. This type of organization really makes it easy for the customer, because no sorting of ingredients is required. The cooled proteins are stored on the bottom of the box with a large amount of ice. With Amazon Meal Kits, each dish comes in a small and very well organized individually labeled box. Since the box is compact you can simply place it, as is, straight in the fridge. Inside the box you will find all that you need for the recipe, including the proteins. There is no ice inside the box, but it is delivered inside an Amazon Fresh cooling bag with ample ice inside.

The App and Website:

Plated provides an easy to use website and app. You can register, select dishes for the week, see upcoming menus, define preference of eating, change payment method etc – all in a very user-friendly way. With Amazon Meal Kits it is quite different as everything is done through the Amazon Fresh interface. You can add meals as you desire, and you can usually make changes to your order up until the day before your delivery day.

Plan terms:

It is when looking at Plan terms where you will find the biggest differences between the two competitors. Plated offers a subscription service, with the flexibility of skipping weeks if needed and you can quite easily cancel the subscription via the Plated website. With Amazon Meal Kits you need to have an Amazon Fresh account, which is where your order your meal kits.  There is no subscription for the Amazon Meal Kit service. All you do is pick the dishes that you want and add these to your Amazon Fresh cart. All meals from Amazon Meal Kits are designed for two people.

Add-ons

With Amazon, you can combine your meal kit purchase with your normal grocery shopping via Amazon Fresh. So as far as I can see it, Amazon Meal Kits are in fact an add-on to your grocery shopping! With Plated, you will find a selection of two changing desserts every week, at a cost of $8 each. This is quite a unique option for those of you who have a sweet tooth!

Pricing

Plated offers the two-person plan for $11.95 per dish per person, and the three to four-person plan for $9.95 per dish per person. There is an additional shipping cost of $7.95 for orders under $60. With Amazon Meal Kits, the cost of the meal kits ranges from $15.99 to $19.99 for a two person kit, depending on the selected dish. Since Amazon Meal Kits is only available through the Amazon Fresh account, there is a fixed cost of $14.99 per month to be a Prime Fresh member. Shipping is free for orders above $50. Since you can combine the purchase of groceries with your purchase of meal kits it is quite easy to reach this amount even if you only order one or two meal kits. As I see it, Amazon Meal Kits is an add on option for people who are using or want to use Amazon Fresh for their ongoing grocery shopping.
