The meal kit delivery service industry is one that is rapidly growing and constantly evolving. Over the past few years many new companies have entered the industry while the established companies continue to thrive while continuing to increase their products and services on a regular basis. No company is the same as the other in terms of what they offer and as a result, they all appeal to quite different audiences. So, when you first start looking at using a meal kit delivery service, it can be confusing when it comes to choosing which company provides the best option for you. Which is exactly where we come in. We provide information on all meal kit delivery services, do comparisons, review their different recipes and generally give you an overview of the industry in one convenient place.
We are excited in this comparison to be looking at two very interesting meal kit delivery services. Martha & Marley Spoon is the meal kit company created by the mother of all American home cooking – Martha Stewart. We will be comparing Martha & Marley Spoon to Blue Apron. Blue Apron is one of the pioneers of the industry and remains one of the largest meal kit delivery services today. Both companies provide great options, but they do have some major differences. So, let’s start diving into the comparison and looking at all the details.
Variety of plan:
Martha & Marley Spoon offers two types of plans, both of which come with some great flexibility:
- Two-person plan – with two, three or four meals per week
- Three-Four person Family Plan – with two, three or four meals per week
Blue Apron offers two plan options as well:
- Two-person plan – with either two or three meals per week
- A Family Plan for four-people with a choice of two to four meals per week.
Variety of dishes:
When it comes to variety, Martha & Marley Spoon has the upper hand, with a menu that includes ten different dishes every week! This weekly selection comes from more than 18,000 of Martha’s favorite recipes. In the weekly menu you can find vegetarian, dairy free, low calories and kid friendly dishes.
With Blue Apron you get to choose from eight dishes every week in the two-person plan, and if you go for the Family Plan your choice is limited to four dishes per week. Among these you will find some vegetarian and Mediterranean diet dishes.
Style and complexity of dishes
With Blue Apron, the dishes were quite varied, ranging from classic dishes with a twist to dishes that were a little more sophisticated. The recipes are all easy to cook, following a great recipe page, and usually, take 25-40 minutes to cook.
Quality of products
Both Martha & Marley Spoon and Blue Apron include high quality ingredients in their meal kits. It is important to note that on occasion, the portion sizes that Blue Apron delivers are too small. The quality of products from Martha & Marley Spoon, from our experience, is beyond amazing! Martha & Marley Spoon works directly with the finest purveyors to deliver ingredients like grass-fed beef, Berkshire pork, American-caught shrimp, artisanal cheeses, and more to your door.
When looking at Blue Apron, they guarantee that they only use meat with no added hormones, all vegetables are farm fresh and where possible organic and all seafood is sustainably sourced.
Both Martha & Marley Spoon and Blue Apron use specifically designed and labeled carton boxes. There is, however, a very important difference between the two companies regarding packaging and delivery that you need to be aware of.
Martha & Marley Spoon ensures that each dish is individually organised in its own labeled paper bag. The box is very organised, and all the cooled items come in a specially insulated bag with ice. The way that the meal kit deliveries from Martha & Marley Spoon are organised means that no sorting of your delivery is required as it has all been done for you. You simply need to put the organised ingredients away in the pantry or the refrigerator.
Blue Apron, on the other hand, does not provide individual labels on the meal ingredients and they are all packed together in the box. So, you will need to sort out the ingredients of each dish. The only thing that is wrapped is a small bag with the spices and seasonings, and the cooled items are located on the bottom of the box with sufficient ice. Sorting out your ingredients from a Blue Apron delivery can be fairly time consuming so it is something that you need to factor in when ordering a Blue Apron meal kit delivery.
The app and website:
Both Martha & Marley Spoon and Blue Apron offer a well-organized and easy to use website and app. Everything you need to do to manage your account can be completed online. You can register, select your plan and desired dishes, define your eating preferences, change your payment method etc – all online in a very easy way.
With both companies, the service is available as an ongoing subscription. However, both will allow you to skip weeks if necessary and you are able to cancel the account whenever you desire with no cancellation charges.
Add ons and extra services –
Martha & Marley Spoon offers a selection of two fiesta boxes – a kit that contains everything you need to make an appetizer, entree, and dessert for a party of four or eight people.
Blue Apron offers a selection of wines as a monthly subscription. The cost is $65.99 for a selection of six wines and that includes shipping. As part of this subscription they provide recommendations for the right wines to accompany each dish! They also have a retail service which provides cookware and other kitchen supplies.
Both are very good options. Martha & Marley Spoon is an option that is all about classic home cooking. The option provided by Blue Apron is quite varied, with a range of that includes classic dishes and dishes that are a real gourmet meal at home. After trying boxes from both companies, we think that Blue Apron is the better option.
First of all, the Price is more attractive and affordable! Second, in terms of the taste and style of the dishes, we felt that the Blue Apron recipes are more creative and tasty.
