With our extensive meal kit company reviews, we aim to make navigating the complex and ever-changing meal kit industry a little easier for you.
Today we are looking at two companies who offer services that would satisfy those who are after some sort of plant-centric meal kit service. These two companies are Green Chef and Hungryroot.
Green Chef is a long-established meal kit delivery company that is proud of the fact that they are a USDA certified organic company. Hungry Root is a relatively new company that provides a plant-centric meal kit service.
Green Chef Vs Hungryroot- Variety of plan
As a Green Chef customer, you will have two different plans to choose from. You can change plans from week to week if you desire. The Green Chef plans are as follows:
- Two-person Plan: Three different meals per week with a total of six servings
- Four-person Plan: Four different meals per week with a total of eight servings
The website of Hungry Root was not the easiest to navigate and we did have difficulties trying to ascertain what plans were available until we logged in and set up our account. The Hungry Root plans are as follows:
- The Starter Set – designed for singletons or couples and includes three to four meals on a weekly basis along with some grab-and-go breakfasts, snacks or desserts.
- The Good Life – designed for couples or families and includes up to five to six meals on a weekly basis along with some grab-and-go breakfasts, snacks or desserts.
- The Family Plan – designed for families and includes seven to eight meals on a weekly basis along with some grab-and-go breakfasts, snacks or desserts.

Green Chef Vs Hungryroot- Variety of dishes
As a Green Chef customer, you will have access to a diverse menu that includes options that are suitable to a plant-centric diet, and many other dietary requirements as well. Your menu choices include paleo, vegan, keto, omnivore, carnivore, vegetarian and gluten-free. When using Green Chef, you choose one specific plan, and then as part of that plan, you receive up to three delicious organic meals every week.
The Hungryroot menu includes options for breakfast, lunch, dinner and some snacks. Their menu has been designed so that you can mix and match the different selections to create rounded meals that are all able to be prepared in less than 10 minutes.
Style and complexity of dishes
Green Chef is all about delicious meal kits that are convenient to prepare and made with all organic ingredients! Green Chef does not believe that eating well should be a time-consuming process, and as a result, they have created meal kits that can all be served within 30 minutes. Their meal kits are made up of the freshest organic ingredients combined with delicious and easy-to-follow recipes.
We did have a few issues with the Hungryroot website in that we were unable to access the menu options for weeks in advance and could only look at a limited range of examples. the Hungryroot menu items are designed to be paired together to create a range of easy to prepare meals. Unfortunately, We honestly thought that the Hungryroot meals were a mish-mash of items, and not at all at the same level of the Green Chef chef-designed meals.

Green Chef Vs HungryRoot- Quality of Ingredients
Green Chef is a USDA certified organic company which really holds them head and shoulders above the rest, when it comes to meal kits that contain only the healthiest organic ingredients. Green Chef is very proud of its network of suppliers that include a trusted range of ranchers, farmers, fishermen and artisans who produce only the best organic ingredients and ensure that sustainable farming practices are followed.
Unfortunately, we were unable to find out much information about the chain of supply for the Hungryroot ingredients. We found this highly concerning, especially considering they are a plant-centric company. When it comes to Hungryroot, we are unable to advise if their ingredients are organic, come from trusted sources, are sustainably sourced or chemical free. They do seem to focus on meals that are rich in healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, fiber, minerals and phytonutrients. Hungryroot does state that no artificial preservatives or refined sugars are used in their meal kits.

The Box of Green Chef and Hungry Root
Both Green Chef and Hungryroot deliver their meal kits in fully recyclable specially designed boxes that include recyclable insulation and non-toxic gel ice packs. This is very convenient as both boxes can be left outside the refrigerator for a few hours if you are unable to unpack them when they are delivered.
When unpacking both the Green Chef and Hungryroot deliveries, you will need to allow a little time for sorting the ingredients. All ingredients are labelled but have not been grouped with their respective meal kits. With Hungryroot, as there are no individual recipe cards included with your delivery, you will also need to look at the recipe box included or go online so that you can be sure of which ingredients go with each dish.
The App and Website
While there is little information offered about the Hungryroot service on its homepage, once you have created an account you will be able to access the relevant plan information that you need.
Overall, we did find that the Green Chef website generally provided more information and was comparatively easier to use. Once you have created your accounts, you will be able to fully manage your accounts with both companies online. This includes registration, menu selection, updating personal details, skipping weeks and cancelling your account.
Plan terms
Both Green Chef and Hungryroot offer flexible subscription services. You have the option to skip weeks whenever required and you can cancel your account for both companies, in a hassle-free way online.
Bottom line- Green Chef Vs Hungryroot for Vegans- Which is the best?
Our comparisons always must have a winner and for us, in this case, it was easily Green Chef. We love the fact that Green Chef is a USDA approved organic company and is also officially certified to cater for gluten-free diets. The taste and style of the Green Chef vegan and vegetarian meals is always pleasing and easy to cook, and overall their website and ordering process is more user friendly.
