I am a big meal kit fan, that’s for sure. I have been using meal kit services now for several years and I think it is a wonderful way of enhancing your cooking & dining experiences without putting any extra effort into thinking about new things to cook or searching for difficult to find ingredients.
As a hard-working mom, one of the most important benefits for me of using meal kits is the time you save. Meal kits mean that you can enjoy delicious meals with quite impressive levels of sophistication while spending a minimal amount of time in the kitchen.
I must tell you that after a long working day combined with a busy afternoon spent looking after my two young ones, that most times I am left with almost zero energy to cook a decent meal for my husband and I. That is why Home Chef is so handy and is why I was so glad to receive another Home Chef box for review.
Home Chef has been around for a few years now, and I believe that in that time, it has developed into a perfect example of what a meal kit delivery service should be. Following are just some of the reasons why I love Home Chef so much:
- Home Chef is focused on delivering fast, easy to follow and fuss-free recipes. The maximum cooking time of Home Chef meals is no more than 30-35 minutes
- Home Chef has one of the best recipe selections in the industry, offering a diverse menu of 16 meals every week. Three of these are five-minute lunch options with no cooking required. Home Chef meals always come with an interesting twist as well.
- Home Chef offers a user-friendly website and app., making the ordering process quick and simple.
- Subscription to Home Chef is very flexible and comes with the option of choosing the preferred amount of servings you prefer per meal. Also, all menu items are available to everyone and you can mix and match between the different type of meals. For example, you can choose a low-carb meal in the same delivery as a vegetarian meal and so on.
- The Home Chef prices are more than fair and offer great value for money, especially since the portion sizes are usually quite generous.
- Home Chef offer some appealing ‘add-on’ options that will make your dining experience even better – 5-minutes lunches, smoothies and a fruit basket.
- The bottom line is that I have years of experience of trying meal kits and I have tasted countless number of meals from the Home Chef menu. I have been pleased every time! Ingredients from Home Chef are always super fresh and delicious!
In my Home Chef delivery this week I chose three separate dishes which included as follows:
- Mediterranean Lentil Salad with Burrata Cheese
- Japanese Teriyaki Shrimp Bowl
- Chicken Poblano Poppers
The first thing you notice when opening the Home Chef box is the wonderful organization of the contents of the box. All the ingredients are packed, labeled and organised for each individual dish. This type of organization is super convenient and makes the unpacking quick and easy. There was also a large amount of ice included in the box, to ensure that all ingredients were kept nicely cooled while in transit.
Something else that you notice immediately with Home Chef, especially when you open the bags of each dish is the wonderful quality of ingredients that are used. The lentils looked amazing, the shrimp were vacuum packed to guarantee their freshness, and the poblano peppers were large, shiny and hard. The fact that the ingredients in my Home Chef box were of such a high quality came as no surprise to me. Home Chef is very proud of the fact that they have partnered with farms known for their high-quality supply of food. Some of these farms include ‘Paysan Breton’ Butter, ‘Worldwide Farms’ for farm fresh herbs and vegetables and ‘Sea to Table’ for sustainably sourced seafood.
Now that I have given you an overview of my experience with Home Chef, the ordering and the box, I would like to give you a personal review of each meal included in this delivery.
Name of dish: Mediterranean Lentil Salad with Burrata Cheese
Cooking time: 25 minutes
Taste ranking: 94
I love lentils, especially beluga lentils which are very small and darkly colored. An interesting fact is that beluga lentils are called so because of their resemblance to caviar! Their earthy taste is amazing, and they are also super healthy and packed with great proteins. I first tasted them while visiting Greece a few years ago but it is quite hard to find them here in the USA, so I was surprised to see that they were included in this recipe and very excited about cooking this dish. This salad was very easy to make. It simply involved cooking the lentils, quickly cooking the remainder of the vegetables and making the honey-mustard-basil vinaigrette and then plating. As easy as that! Nice, fresh and simple! I also must mention the amazing burrata cheese that was one of the ingredients of this recipe. It was so fresh and had a great texture – stable outside yet very soft and creamy in the middle. Absolute heaven!
It was a great dinner, not too heavy and super healthy.
Name of dish: Japanese Teriyaki Shrimp Bowl
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Taste ranking: 95
I love Japanese food! I was also pleased to learn a new technique in this recipe – that of using corn-starch for coating the shrimp before cooking them on a hot pan. It added a beautiful crispiness to the shrimp and when they were combined with the amazing Japanese style sauce, made from a Teriyaki glaze, mirin and sesame seeds, it was just perfect!
The slaw was also delicious and the cabbage and edamame added an extra crunch and freshness to the meal. I poured us some unfiltered sake and we had the loveliest Japanese night in!
Name of dish: Chicken Poblano Poppers
Cooking time: 35 minutes
Taste ranking: 100
Initially I thought that this looked like a very interesting dish to cook which is why I tried it. I started off by roasting the poblanos peppers in the oven, then went on to prepare the filling. I loved the idea of adding fresh corn and tomatoes to the chicken stuffing mixture, and the smells coming from the kitchen while I was cooking were very tempting! Once the stuffing was cooked, I simply had to fill the peppers, top with some shredded cheddar cheese and return to the oven for another six minutes. While the peppers were roasting for the final time, I made the chive-sour cream sauce. Plating was very easy, I left the stuffed peppers on the baking sheet, topped with the sauce and added some tortilla chips and served! This dish was so yummy! It was actually a perfect dish that had a nice twist to it and a lovely crispness and delicate flavor. I also have to say that I was pleasantly surprised that this dish was very low in calories with only about 600 calories per serving.
Who is Home Chef for?
