It has been almost impossible to miss the fact that the use of meal kit companies is growing increasingly popular.  This is not just a fad either, meal kit companies are here to stay!

Over the last few years there has been a huge number of meal kit companies that have emerged onto the US market so it is getting increasingly harder to know which companies are best suited for you.  That is why we are here, to provide you with ample information to make the best choice possible when it comes to meal kit companies. Meal kit delivery services offer the delivery of a meal kit that comes complete with pre-portioned ingredients accompanied with recipes created by professional chefs. These kits allow you to  create a range of quality meals in your own home. Meal kits are designed with the intention of making your home cooking experience easy and enjoyable (both the cooking and the eating part).

I have been using meal kit companies for quite some time now, and this week I had the pleasure of receiving a Plated box to cook in my own kitchen. I have to say that one of my long-time favorite meal kit companies is Plated! From my point of view, Plated offers the perfect cooking experience. They have a deep understanding that every great meal starts with quality ingredients.  That is why they use 100% antibiotic-free meats and beef with no added hormones, fish and seafood that has been sustainably sourced and farm fresh seasonal produce and handcrafted specialty items.

The first thing you will notice when ordering a Plated box is the incredible variety of meals on offer – 20 dishes every week! These menus are designed for both newbies and experienced pros in the kitchen. Some of the dishes can take a bit longer in terms of preparation time while others are very quick and easy.  Meal preparation can take anything from 20 minutes up to an hour. Since there are so many options available with Plated, I am sure that anyone could find something that they would love to cook and eat with Plated. The way I see it, Plated provides less of a home meal kit service and more of a fine-dining and inspirational food experience in your home every week!  All Plated meals also come with easy to follow recipes, so you won’t get lost in the cooking process.

The variety of the dishes can include all-time favorites such as Tacos or burgers. The cuisine on offer has influences from Asia, Mexico,  Europe and the Mediterranean. You are also guaranteed to find lovely and unusual twists and flavors in every dish you try. As a bonus, Plated offers a great add-on option of two desserts every week – for example Napoleons with Dark Chocolate Drizzle or No-Churn Coffee Ice Cream.

Within the Plated weekly menu, you will be able to find many vegetarian, low carb and child-friendly recipes.  They also provide the option of ‘fast+fun’ dishes. I highly recommend including at least one of these quick recipe selections in your weekly delivery since many of us have limited time available during the week.

After giving you my general thoughts on the company, let’s start with this week’s box review:

It is always exciting for me to open a new meal kit delivery box. I was very impressed by the quality of ingredients I received with this Plated Box. Everything looked fresh and colorful and I could not wait to start cooking! All the refrigerated proteins were kept cool at the bottom of the box surrounded with ample ice. Another thing I loved about this delivery was that Plated separates each dish into its own labeled bag. That way there was no sorting for me to do and I could just put the ingredients directly into the fridge or pantry. What a treat!

For this week box I had selected two dishes:

  • Crispy Mushroom Burgers With White Cheddar And Avocado
  • Shrimp Coconut Curry With Corn And Zucchini

On a general note I will say that my husband and I loved both dishes. Following is my detailed review for each one:

Crispy Mushroom Burgers with White cheddar and Avocado by Plated

Name of dish: Crispy Mushroom Burgers with White cheddar and Avocado

Cooking time: 30 minutes

Taste ranking: 96%

My main notes:

I have always found it very tricky to cook a perfect burger, especially if it’s a veggie burger. It is a challenge to make one that stays stable yet moist and tender. This mushroom burger by Plated was a treat! It had an earthy taste from the mushrooms and thyme and a nice edge from the parmesan cheese. The brioche buns were excellent and I loved the fact that they were toasted and ended up being a little crispy. The topping of the avocado-pesto mash and the fresh plum tomato was so good. For a burger this felt and tasted incredibly fresh and healthy – it was just perfect.

I also must mention the arugula salad as a side dish. The leaves were super fresh and had a great radish-like flavor, so it really didn’t need to be garnished with anything more than some olive oil, lemon, salt and pepper.

Shrimp Coconut Curry with corn and Zucchini by Plated

Name of dish: Shrimp Coconut Curry with corn and Zucchini

Cooking time: 35 minutes

Taste ranking: 90%

My main notes:

I have never tasted millet, so I was very curious about this dish. The fact that you get to try new ingredients and flavors is  one of the main reasons that I love using meal kit companies and highly recommend it for others! The millet had a lovely nutty taste with a great texture; it was somewhat similar to couscous. I thought it was the perfect bed for this curry!

The ingredients that came with this dish were again, very fresh and the shrimp were of a good quality. The aromas at home while the curry was cooking were so lovely. The only thing that I would suggest as an improvement for this dish is that I felt it needed some additional spiciness. I took the liberty of adding some chili flakes which did the trick for us.

This dish took about 35 minutes to cook, which is great, and the processes involved were quite simple. I just had to cook the millet in a small pot with water adding some butter at the end, and make the curry casserole. That’s it, nice and simple! Overall a good dish for seafood lovers.
