Meal kit comparison reviews are one of the best ways to determine which meal kit service is right for you. At The Meal Kit Review, we understand how overwhelming it can be to find a meal kit when the industry is constantly changing.
In our review, we take a closer look at Freshly and Plated, which are two unique meal kit services. We’ll compare the two so that you can easily decide which service is best for your lifestyle and diet.
Freshly and Plated Variety of Plan
Freshly offers four flexible weekly plans.
Since Freshly offers single serving meals every week, you can choose either four, six, nine, or 12 meals in your weekly delivery plan.
Plated offers three flexible weekly plans:
- Two-person plan
- Three-person plan
- Four-person plan
Every Plated plan allows you to choose two, three, or four recipes every week, which can change whenever you need more or less food.
Freshly currently delivers to all states within the continental U.S., but some ZIP codes may take longer than 48-hours to deliver. When you register with Freshly, they will let you know if they can’t deliver to you.
Plated also delivers to most of the continental United States, but they do not deliver to Alaska or Hawaii. Some cities in Texas, such as San Antonio, currently do not accept deliveries from Plated.
You can enter your ZIP code onto the Plated site to see if they deliver to your area. Plated does sell kits at supermarkets across the U.S., but it’s important to note that they are not the same as what’s delivered to your doorstep.
Freshly and Plated Dishes Variety
Freshly’s weekly menu includes 30 dishes, which include some vegetarian options and a variety of other cuisine styles. Each week, you can select from a new menu of 30 dishes.
Plated offers 20 recipes, as well as a few dessert options, every week. Since there are no categories that you are required to commit to, you can select your meals from any of the 20 recipes, which change out every week.
Style and Complexity of Dishes
We like a lot of the dishes that both meal services have to offer, but some of Freshly’s meals were a bit underwhelming and didn’t taste as good as some of their other single-serving dinners. Freshly focuses on offering a meal that is entirely ready to go, to make it fast and convenient for every customer.
Plated offers classic meals with a unique take on flavors and more sophisticated techniques. While Plated is not as convenient as Freshly, we think there’s more variety, and the taste is fresher because you are assembling the meals yourself.
Plated may have some recipes that are a bit overwhelming to some people with limited cooking skills, but many of the recipes are quick and easy.
Quality of Products
Every meal that you receive from Freshly is created with ingredients that are 100 percent natural and they are also certified gluten-free. When you get a meal from Freshly, you don’t have to worry about preservatives, refined sugars, or other ingredients like hydrogenated oils.
Plated uses sustainably sourced fish and seafood, as well as meats that are free of hormones and antibiotics, whenever they can. When you order a meal kit from Plated, you will receive a meal that has fresh seasonal ingredients as well as some organic or handcrafted artisan items.
Both companies send their meals in a box that is clearly labeled and has an attractive label. Freshly and Plated ensure that there is enough ice to keep your food temperature safe for a few hours.
Freshly uses eco-friendly packaging, which includes recycled insulation (made from denim). Each meal comes with adequate information, such as nutritional facts and heating instructions, and the containers are 100 percent recyclable.
Plated takes the guesswork out of sorting your meal kit. They organize, label, and sort all of your ingredients, so it’s ready to go when you are ready to cook.
The App and Website
Freshly has an app, but it is only currently available with iOS. You can register, complete your order, and take care of other plan options on their website or with the app.
Plated has an app and a website, which makes registering and managing your account effortless while you’re on the go. Both companies allow you to change your plans, skip a week, and take a look at future menu plans.
You also have the option to check out nutritional information and a breakdown of ingredients, so you always know what you’re getting.
Since both companies offer flexible plans, Freshly and Plated makes it easy for you to skip a week of meals, change your meal plans, or even cancel if you decide it’s not the right plan for you.
If you need to make changes to your account, you can visit the app or website. Either option is hassle-free, and making changes is simple.
Freshly currently doesn’t offer any desserts or extras but Plated offers two choices of dessert every week. You can order these when you select your meals for the week.
There’s no doubt that Plated and Freshly make it more convenient for people to eat healthy food that is easy to prepare. We tasted many recipes from both companies, and it’s clear that both companies put a lot of thought and effort into their recipes.
Plated, our personal favorite, is an excellent option for people who have special diets like vegetarian, low carb, gluten free or want low-calorie options. Freshly is best-suited for people who don’t want to bother with preparing a meal at all and want a single-serving meal that’s ready to go right away.
Plated is the winner of the two companies because not only do they have a great selection of recipes, but the overall taste of every meal is better than what Freshly offers. Convenience is important, but at the end of the day, we are more concerned with the taste of a meal.
