Is It Tasty? Our Customer Experience

Over the past six years, we have gained extensive experience with both Home Chef and Blue Apron. That’s why our team re-tested them for two weeks in 2024 to update and verify our review.

We thoroughly enjoyed both services, each providing satisfying and delicious recipes. The delivery boxes were well-insulated, easy to sort, and filled with fresh, high-quality produce. The included recipe cards were easy to follow with simple steps, making the cooking process straightforward.

We Tried Home Chef’s Coconut Rice Plantain Bowl with Black Beans and Corn Pico de Gallo

This dish was a unique and authentic experience; it was flavorful and easy to prepare. The sweetness of the coconut rice and fried plantains was well balanced with the spiciness of the pico de gallo and smoky black beans. The portion sizes were larger than expected and very filling. Everything came together in 35 minutes and felt like a restaurant-quality meal!

We Tried Blue Apron’s Buenos Aires Beef Empanadas

This classic Argentinian-style recipe was delicious but took quite a while, and the cooking steps were more complex. The ingredients were of very high quality, and the portion size of this dish was good for two people. The meat was tender, and we loved the addition of olives to the filling. We loved the taste and thought this was a great dish from the Blue Apron culinary team!

What Do Customers Think of It?

Blue Apron Reviews:

Customers appreciate Blue Apron’s premium ingredients and gourmet recipes and think it is a great alternative to HelloFresh.

One user shared on Reddit, I have tended to use Blue Apron lately when I want to order a meal kit. We enjoy cooking so we don’t mind having some steps to follow but it is usually easy enough for us. The quality has been pretty good and I have generally liked the taste of the meals.”

Another customer stated, “Blue Apron has less menu options each week, but their recipes and ingredients in my experience are a higher quality. For example, they have steak on their regular menu weekly, when it is almost never on the HelloFresh regular menu (maybe once a year). I feel like they put more energy into having unique, well-crafted recipes, versus more of them.”

Subscribers rank the Blue Apron app 4.7 out of 5 stars with over 40.5k ratings.

Home Chef Reviews:

Home Chef subscribers love the ease of prepping and cooking their recipes. The quick preparation makes them convenient and an excellent fit for picky eaters.

One subscriber shared on Reddit, “The oven ready meals are definitely better than ANYTHING Hello Fresh offers. I switched to HF for a while and was really disappointed. They are more expensive and the food isn’t that great. It’s ok, but HC is way better.”

Another Home Chef customer shared, “We used them a lot back when kids would not touch a veggie or anything weird. Good amount of some Protein with a sauce on side and starch and veggie. That was very helpful with the kids being more picky.”

The easy-to-use Home Chef app ranks an impressive 4.8 out of 5 stars with over 20k ratings.

Customer Support

Both companies offer a detailed FAQ section with answers to most questions that can come to mind. If you have any issues regarding your subscription, both have a customer service support team, as follows:
